Summer Skin Care: Why Sunburn and Massage Don't Mix

Summer in Surrey is a fantastic time of year. Whether you’re out on the golf course, enjoying a drink in a Woking beer garden, or just catching some rays in the garden, the sun is a welcome change. However, as a professional massage therapist with over 14 years of experience specialising in male-only sessions, I’ve seen first-hand how a bit too much sun can ruin more than just your weekend, it can completely derail your massage plans.
If you’re planning to visit my discreet Woking apartment for a naturist massage or a Swedish massage session, there are some critical summer skin precautions you need to take.
My goal is always to provide a space where you can be yourself, completely relaxed and clothing-free. But for that to happen, your skin needs to be in good health. Here is why sunburn and professional massage simply do not mix.
The Problem with Sunburnt Skin
I’ll be direct: if you have been sunburnt recently, do not book a massage. If you turn up to your session with red, hot, or painful skin, I won't be able to work on those areas.
When your skin is sunburnt, it’s effectively an injury. It is inflamed, sensitive, and actively trying to heal. Applying pressure and friction, even with the high-quality oils I use, will only cause more pain and potentially damage the tissue further. It isn’t about being "tough"; it’s about safety and common sense.
Massage increases blood flow to the skin. While that’s usually a benefit, on a fresh burn, it can actually increase inflammation and heat, making the burn feel even worse. If you’ve spent too long in the sun, wait until the redness and heat have completely subsided before you head to my table.
The Peeling Skin Rule
This is a firm policy of mine: if your skin begins to peel during the session, the massage will need to be paused. It’s not just my personal preference either, it’s a professional standard across the massage industry.
I know that sounds strict, but it’s there to protect both client and therapist and to maintain a safe, hygienic, and pleasant environment. Once skin is peeling, the friction from massage isn’t enjoyable for you and it isn’t ideal for a smooth, relaxing massage experience. It’s also not pleasant or hygienic for me as the therapist. To be direct, it means asking me to touch and rub skin that is shedding, and that isn’t considered good professional practice.
Any professional massage therapist should follow the same hygiene and comfort protocols. Peeling skin is a sign that the deeper layers are still vulnerable, and continuing to massage over it would go against the basic standards of safe bodywork. My sessions are designed for total relaxation, and I take pride in the high standard of my studio. If you know you’re in the "peeling phase" of a sunburn, please reschedule your appointment. I’d much rather see you when your skin is healthy and ready to actually enjoy the experience.

Essential Summer Skin Care Tips
To make sure you’re always "massage-ready" during the summer months, I recommend a few simple self-care habits. These will keep your skin in top condition for our clothing-free sessions.
1. Hydrate from the Inside Out
This is the most overlooked part of skin care. Dehydrated skin feels tight, looks dull, and doesn’t respond as well to massage. If you’re drinking more coffee or alcohol in the sun, you need to double your water intake. Hydrated skin is more elastic and handles the pressure of a Swedish massage much better.
2. Moisturise Daily
Don't wait until you're dry to reach for the lotion. Using a simple, non-greasy moisturiser daily will help maintain your skin’s natural barrier. It keeps the surface smooth and healthy, which makes the sensation of a naturist massage even more enjoyable.
3. Use SPF 30 or Higher
It sounds obvious, but many guys forget the areas they don't usually see, like the back of the neck, shoulders, and the backs of the legs. These are exactly the areas I spend the most time on during a session. Protect them. A "base tan" is a myth; a burn is a burn, and it will keep you off my massage table.

Preparing for Your Session
When you come for a professional male massage in Woking, you’re paying for a premium, judgement-free experience. Part of that experience is the environment I provide, a private, heated studio where you can completely let go.
Before you arrive:
Check your skin: Look in the mirror. Any redness? Any signs of peeling?
Shower: Use the facilities I provide to ensure your skin is clean and ready for the oils.
Be honest: If you got a bit too much sun yesterday, just let me know. We can reschedule for when you'll actually benefit from the work.

Summary: Healthy Skin, Better Relaxation
A massage is an investment in your well-being. To get the most out of it, your skin needs to be able to handle the treatment. Sunburn and peeling skin are temporary, but they are absolute contraindications for the work I do.
Keep up with your hydration, use your sun cream, and moisturise daily. When your skin is healthy and you’re ready to recharge in a private, professional setting, I’m here to help.
